Week #15 - San Bernardino (Rancho Ward) - San Bernardino, CA Mission
Hey everyone!
Well time has just been flying by here in San Bernardino. It's crazy that it's only been four days since I've written. Some of the highlights of the week was I got to help set up a huge service project for those that could not afford paying for dental work. It was pretty fun. I learned how to set up some of the tools and sat in chairs in order to help the camera crews filming the service project.
Last Saturday, it was really wet and cold in the morning. Even this morning was a little chilly. However, it's better weather for biking than blazing heat.
We also had the zone activity which was fun. We played volleyball and ate hot dogs. What was also fun is that a couple of police officers came up to us to introduce themselves. We were worried that we were doing something wrong, but they just said they wanted to be friendly and see who they are. They were pretty friendly and once they found out that we were missionaries from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints they told us a funny story. One of them is in a bicycle division that catches criminals. They're uniform is a white dress shirt with khaki shorts. Apparently some of the criminals they sneak up and arrest say, "I thought you guys were the mormons!" I laughed so hard at that because I'm one of those missionaries who bicycle around in a white shirt.
Anyway, my dad asked me some questions and I thought I would answer them in this email.
So how is this area different from when you were out in Salton City?
My area is pretty different because it mostly covers city. Also, instead of just covering the area of the branch, we cover the entire Stake of San Bernardino. It's a pretty big area, but we share it with some Hermana Missionaries that have a car and so cover the places we can't cover on bike.
Are the members helpful and friendly?
Members are always helpful and friendly. Multiple members have offered us dinners whenever we need them. The ward isn't huge but there are members excited to do missionary work and trust a lot in the missionaries.
Where do you get food?
Walmart or food 4 less. It really depends on if we can get a ride or not. There's a Stater Bros around the corner, however we prefer to transport our groceries by car if possible.
Are you in an apartment?
Yes.
How often do you use your Spanish?
Pretty often. There are plenty of people we met that speak Spanish though we also teach people who are English speakers and then refer them to the English missionaries.
One special experience that we have had is with one of the people we have been teaching. During this week, he was having a hard time. We passed by and gave him a very powerful priesthood blessing. He has great faith and feels the spirit so strongly that when we opened up the Book of Mormon and read the title page he said that the book was sacred. Sadly, he's moving so we'll have to hand him off to some other missionaries. However, it was a privilege to plant that seed in his heart.
Here's a few pictures
1. Sopes. They were delicious!
2. At a stake activity they had a family based escape the room. We heat the record by one second!
